The ultimate guide to cricket coaching

The ultimate guide to cricket coaching

Cricket coaches are an important part of the sport. Without them, players would not get the opportunity to improve their skills and reach their maximum potential. Coaching can also provide a potential career path for those who want to help up and coming cricketers develop their skills.

This guide will give you all the information surrounding cricket coaches, from their role, their pay, the equipment needed, job prospects and cricket coaches based near you to help improve your game.

What do cricket coaches actually do?

Cricket coaching sessions are mainly 1 of 2 types, either 1-to-1 or team sessions. These sessions will look completely different during the planning and delivery phases. A key role of a coach is to assess the needs of the session and plan accordingly. For example in a 1-to-1 session, coaches can look at more technical aspects of a players game i.e. head position when batting or lateral flexion when bowling. These 1-to-1 sessions allow coaches to iron out these small technical details to improve a player's game. On the other hand, team/group sessions may look at more scenario based drills where you may see a pair of batters looking to score a target based when facing 2 bowlers. Group sessions are also good for enhancing the team's overall fielding skills. These group sessions can do more than just improve players' cricketing ability, but also improve mental aspects such as teamwork, communication and resilience.

Another key aspect of a coach's responsibilities is being able to provide players with appropriate and correct feedback. Feedback must be constructive otherwise the player may feel talked down to, impacting their confidence in a negative way. Coaches must learn to recognise good and bad practise so that they can provide feedback accordingly. This is where having a good knowledge of the sport comes in handy.

The coach is also responsible for the players welfare. This applies before, during and after games. Before a game, a coach will lead a warm up making sure the players are physically prepared for the game as well as discussing tactics so all players can effectively work together. During the game, a coach will be responsible for any incidents or accidents that may occur. They will also support and encourage their team to ensure they keep performing to high standards. After the game, a coach may lead a cool-down to help their players recover as well as providing feedback based on the performance.

How much do cricket coaches get paid?

Coaching can be a successful profession for those who put in the work with an average starting salary ranging from £22,000 per annum (pa) up to £36,000pa. These numbers will increase based on experience as well as past successes. The salary can lead to figures upwards of £55,000pa when looking at jobs in national governing bodies such as the ECB.

How can you get a cricket coaching job?

Coaching opportunities in cricket are expanding daily as the sport continues to grow all over the world. Many cricket county boards are seeking community coaches that go into schools and teach children the fundamentals of the sport. From this many will then begin to coach junior age group cricket such as County U11s where they get a first hand experience of coaching a team. Those wanting further challenge then look towards coaching professionals whether for a major county or national team. As you progress up towards the county and national level, more specific roles begin to open up. These include performance analyst, strength and conditioning coach and position specific coaches (batting, spin, seam and fielding)

These jobs can be found on your local county boards website, the ECB Roles in cricket webpage as well as website such as Cricket.jobs
